(Pante Macassar, Oé-Cusse, July 10, 2021): Mount Pa’is is one of the highest places in the Sub-Region of Oesilo in Oé-Cusse, the Special Administrative Region of Timor-Leste located in Indonesian Territory. On a visit to its peak you will not only be afforded stunning views and scenery, but also learn about the historical and religious significance of the site.
From the peak of Mount Pa’is you can enjoy spectacular views of Oe-Cusse’s capital city of Pante Macassar and the territory of West Timor, Indonesia. There is also a ruin from the Portuguese colonization period, when the peak of Mount Pa’is was used as for surveillance of enemies attempting to enter the territory of Oé-Cusse. Two old cemeteries can also be found on the top Mount Pa’is and the communities of Amkolo Village, Aldeia Manu, and Suku Bobometo perform an annual ritual ceremony there to ask for the blessings of their ancestors. During the Good Friday Easter celebrations, the Catholic community of Oesilo conducts a procession of the cross to the peak of Mount Pa’is.
For visitors wanting to stay overnight, at the peak of mount Pa’is there is a large available area where camping tents can be erected. This would allow visitors to catch the brilliant sunrise and sunset from the peak.
Getting to Mount Pa’is: It is about 26 km from the city center of Pante Macassar and takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes by car or motorbike on the unpaved road. Then it is a 20-minute walk up the hill from center of Oesilo.
